Not much new to tell! Kevin seems pretty happy where he is. We haven't talked to him as much lately because he didn't have the internet and he would have to stand in very long lines to call us with his calling card.
He was finally able to get the internet this week. I have Skyped with him a few times now. My webcam isn't working so he can't see me. We have a new computer and I guess I didn't get the software loaded correctly. But I can see him and he can hear me! Isn't technology amazing!
It has rained a lot and it is very cold there. I said in a previous blog that it had rained for 15 days, well it was actually hours! My bad! I mailed Kevin 2 boxes about 3 weeks ago and he still hasn't gotten them. He has one set of thermals with him and the others are in one of those boxes. I hope he gets them soon.
Every Friday night they have Surf & Turf. He loves it. They feed them very well there. But, he is loosing weight. He has friends that he works out with every night. He told me that he may need a new belt soon. That was part of his plan, to get in shape.
He finally got his first pay check. He was excited about that. I have already paid one of his smaller student loans off. There are three more to go, for now. There are more that will come due here pretty soon. So he is accomplishing his goals!
Today is Adam's birthday. His friends had a little surprise party for him. He received a scratch ticket and won $300.00. Very exciting!! He will be flying home tomorrow. Can't wait to see him. We are buying him a suit for his birthday. He hasn't had a new suit since he started with the theatre.
Life is good! God is sooooo good! Empty nesting isn't bad at all!

Update
Kevin is now back in another city in Afghanistan! The one that doesn't smell! He was in Kandahar. They have open sewage pits there. It was especially bad at night. He is glad to be out of there. Kandahar is in the Southern part of the country. It is warmer there but not nearly as nice. Where he is now is further North. There was a report on the news this morning that 2 soldiers were killed in the Southern part so I am glad he is out of there. He is not sure how long he will be where he is. They were expecting snow so it is much colder.
He said that he flew on a B 17 cargo plane this weekend to get where he is now. It was very exciting. The plane had several pallets of explosives and missile heads!
Last week in Kandahar there was a missile attack. They had to go into a bunker. He was disappointed that nothing happened. I, of course, was very happy that nothing happened! It happened while they were working so he wasn't happy that they weren't paid for that 1/2 hour!
As I said, he is not sure where he will be when they are done where he is. He heard a rumor that they may have a big contract in Africa. That would be exciting.
Adam will be home on Dec. 11 for a few days. Can't wait to see him! We will celebrate his birthday that day with Rays Pizza and Sardells wings. Then we'll wait a couple days, well maybe one, and celebrate Christmas. It will be strange to not have Kevin here and just Adam but times are changing!
I saw a post on Facebook from Kevin today (Tuesday). He said that it has been raining for 15 days. I'm thinking that it must be pretty muddy since they say it is so dusty there. Hopefully he will have a permenant address soon so we can send him Christmas cards!

Kevin's Happy!
Kevin is finally working and he loves it! We were able to Skype this morning for a few minutes. It was really good to see him!
He got to his new unmentionable location and found that they had lost one of his bags. It was his bigger bag that contains his clean underwear, clean socks, his toiletries, and his phone. (The phone isn't working but he uses it to get phone numbers.) That was Saturday and he started working on Sunday. He was supposed to have his bag on Monday but it still was not there. They told him to check back in on Wed. to see if it shows up. He, of course, was pretty angry at the situation because he has been unable to shower, shave, brush his teeth, use deodorant, or change his underwear and socks! There was a guy nearby that said he could use one of his towels and his soap. That made it better but it still doesn't change the situation much. He told me that he'd never take his toothbrush for granted again!
They have a small Post Exchange at this place but he couldn't find deodorant in the little store anywhere.
The company that he works for is leaving Afghanistan. He has applied for the same position with a different company. It looks like they have 3 positions available in Afghanistan. Please pray that he gets on with this other company. He will actually be making more money with the other company than he is with KBR. I am praying for God's will to be done! Also please pray that his bag will arrive on Wed. safe and unharmed. Thanks!
This new location he is at has open sewage pits. He says it isn't too bad during the daytime but it smells pretty bad at night.
Another tidbit is that he wears a bullet proof vest everyday and a safety hat. He says that the vest is heavy because the chest plate is made of metal. (Bryan's is Kevlar and is much lighter in comparison.)

Still Waiting
Well, the only news is that Kevin is still waiting to go to his next location. He is very bored! I suggested that he spend some money and buy a book or a magazine. He worked out the other night with a guy that used to be in the army so he was very sore.
He should be leaving where he is on Saturday which would be Friday night to us. He just really can't wait to get on with this and get to work. The Sarge men do not "sit around and do nothing"
well! Unless it's video games and they say that they really are doing something...just kidding guys! It's a great form of entertainment. (Not for Bryan...then it would be watching football).
Kevin, we are taking your car down to see Lance on Monday. I didn't want to forget to tell you that. I'll let you know what happens with that.
Adam's knee is doing well. He still goes to physical therapy 3 times a week for now. He will be home in mid December. Can't wait to see him! He gets to come here for the annual Harkins Christmas party. He will spend a few extra days with us. The best part is Harkins pays the way!

Not Much News
Kevin still hasn't heard much about where he will be working. They did tell him where he might go but he told me this morning that I am not supposed to publish where he is!
He is still where he was for now and may be leaving in the next day or so. Hopefully he will be going where he can get the Internet on his laptop. He has been using the common area which is okay but not very fast. He is still bored and can't wait to get to work.
Bryan moved Kevin's car yesterday to the parking space we have in our backyard. He was having a hard time doing that (sentimental reasons!) but now we can both park in our garage and the car has it's nice cover on it.
Kevin...Debe C. said it's a nice looking car...just wanted you to know that. She saw it on Friday and no I was not driving it! She dropped me off at the house after we spent the morning together and the truck was at Pep Boys. However, I did drive it to the grocery store! For those of you who don't know, Kevin's car is a 97 Camaro with a rumbling engine and it sounds great! When asked by our chiropractor what was the scariest thing about going to Afghanistan, he replied, "My Mom driving my car!" (It is fun to drive, occasionally!!)

Kevin's in Afghanistn
Kevin left Dubai on Friday afternoon, our time, and arrived at Bagram Air Base a couple of hours later. He called us about 6:30 Staurday am and it was about 6 pm there. He is 11 1/2 hours ahead of us. He is staying in a tent on a cot. He had to but a pillow at the Post Exchange (PX). He spent a big $3.00 on it! They provided him with a sleeping bag. He said that it was kinda weird walking around the PX (its just like a Walgreens) and passing men carrying huge weapons with them.
The nights are chilly and the days are still kinda warm, he thought about 100. He called again last night, which was after breakfast for him. He wasn't sure what he would do all day. He finds out where he will be working on Tuesday. He had heard that they would give them a few days to get acclamated. He said that Tuesday was the first time available for them to have a meeting. So, while others are complaining, he is happy to sit around and get paid!
The food is served in a place like an Old Country Buffet. He said it was pretty good, better than the Lamb Stew in Dubai!
Bryan and I are doing better. We still miss him bunches but it helps that he has been able to call everyday. He bought a phone card before he left that is rechargable. Hopefully he will call tonight after he has breakfast! (Sounds weird!)

My First Blog Ever
Thursday October 29, 2009
Kevin has been gone for almost 2 weeks. It is a lonely feeling to have your baby boy move out of the house. And not just across the city but across the world. Today he is in Dubai, which is a wonderful resort city in Arabia, but not so much for him. Yesterday he was propositioned by a hooker! He thought that was funny! And he says the food that they are served, free, is not so good. He had lamb stew and then chicken stew and they tasted the same, awful!
He left Houston, after staying in a Hilton, on Tuesday Oct 27th at 5:00pm. He arrived in London at 6:37am London time, which was 11:37 pm in Phoenix. He said the airport in London was not good, no views to take pictures of. They flew from London to Dubai that same day. He will leave there on Sat, Oct 31 at 2am. Here that is Fri Oct 30 at 3pm. I am trying to keep the times straight. They fly into Bagrum, Afghanistan. He is not sure where he will be assigned from there.
